Decorating- 2 steps forward 1 step back

For the second year in a row (and also the second time in ten years) the yard was vandalized. Not once this weekend- but twice.

I went out on Saturday morning to put out a few more things and found that a skull was stolen.

They had clearly tried and failed to get the others. After a few of them walked away last year I attached them better this time around, I'd like to think that paid off at least a little.

Some gravestones were also tipped over. But to be fair that could have been wind. (On a side note if anyone knows a really good way of keeping these up I'd love to know. We tried the stakes in the ground but found they aren't strong enough. This year is the first time we've tried the large metal stake in the back- it works better for sure but not all that great)

I fixed the decorations and put how a few more things.

And added a personal note for the person who took my skull. I have another to replace it- but not wanting to add to this persons ill-gotten collection, at the loss of mine, I'll wait until Halloween to put it out.

And for a new and interesting low- on Sunday morning I woke up to this scene in the front yard.

Nothing walked away this time- but I hate redoing things I've already done.

Each year, after the last Trick-or-treaters have gone, I always take this fence in before we go to bed, never trusting it out on Halloween night.

Now I'm starting to think about if I trust it to be out at all. I hate thinking this way, I'd prefer to think that people will simply enjoy the display and leave it in tact.

Clearly though I am wrong.

  1. Something I also have to worry about, since I'm right in the path of the middle school down the street. Haven't had any problems, though, since about 5 years ago when someone was stealing the monster heads I put out on the porch.

I have to do some redecorating this morning, but it's all wind damage. My poor front porch skeletons were torn to pieces by the weekend storm, and I may have to replace a bone or two.

  2. :( When things like that happen I can't help but think that people suck. Ever since someone stole my Union Jack tire caps off of my car less than a week after I got them for my birthday I've been reluctant to put anything nice outside. I usually wait until the day of Halloween to put out our decorations and take them down the next morning. It's a shame to have to be like that but I don't trust people either. Your display looks so nice and people should just enjoy it, not destroy it!

  3. Silly suggestion but it might work.Tie a small cow bell inside each skull on the fence.Scare the heck out of who ever is trying to take them or damage them.It would also be loud enough for you to hear.Hope all goes well

  4. Thanks for the comments, commiseration and suggestions.

I hate that we have to think about stealing when it comes to decorations... wind damage is enough to contend with I think.

I really like the booby trap idea. LOL! Cow bells would be loud enough to wake the dog- lol and she's sweet but sounds bigger than she is when she really gets barking.

  5. I was sorry to read about your vandalism, your decorations are so nice. How about a phony security camera positioned nicely on your porch. Maybe that would scare the monsters.

  6. Thanks Marianne. That's a good suggestion too- I wonder if I could work it into the display somehow... like spider cam or something.

  7. In our yard we use the really cheep metal pipe from Lowes it's actually conduit. We use the metal brackets that hold them in the walls up against the stud. they have a place on each side for a screw. If your tomb stones are not wood (ours are) then you could probably glue them to some strips of wood around the place you would screw in the pipe clip for stability. We have done this for several years using very small screws and they don't move in the wind at all.
