Here's what you need to make them:
A batch of rice cereal treats
Bag of chocolate chips/or any chocolate you like for melting.
Bag of Pretzel rods
Can of potato sticks
Black shoestring licorice
Start with puffed rice cereal treats cut into squares or rectangles.

Mush them onto cone shapes. And yes, mush is a technical term.

Melt a little bit of chocolate. Dip the ends of pretzel rods into the chocolate and then stick them onto your cereal treats.

Set them aside to let the chocolate harden.

Once they are hard you can start adding potato sticks to the sides of the rice cereal cone. You'll have to melt more chocolate. Use an offset spatula or a knife to coat the bottom half of the cone in chocolate. Start adding your potato sticks, working from the bottom up until you've coated all the way around the bottom of the broom.

Do that on all of your treats then go back and coat the top half of the broom in the same way. Starting with the ones that have had the most time for the bottom to set.

Once you've coated all the brooms with potato sticks set them aside and let the chocolate harden.

Last but not least wrap a bit of black licorice around the pretzel stick where the "handle" and the "bristles" of the broom meet. Secure the licorice by tucking the loose ends in.

Salty Sweet Broomstick Treats... YUM!

ReplyDeleteNow that is clever. So clever it's scary! ;) They look scrumptious.
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks Mel!
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! Where do you find that string licorice at? I've searched everywhere for it and can not find it. ...sigh
ReplyDeleteI found the licorice at a candy store in my town... seems like classic candy is only available at these little specialty shops.
ReplyDeleteWhat would you reccomend for packaging?
ReplyDeleteThat's a great question. For individual packaging I'd recommend plastic treat bags. The ones meant for Halloween treats, not individual lollipops, because they are taller and will likely fit the entire broom.
ReplyDeleteBut even if you used a bag meant for lollipops that wasn't quite tall enough you could tie it around the pretzel with a bit of ribbon so the bottom of the broom was still protected.
If you are thinking about how to package a batch of them- I used a cake/pastry box.
Hope that helps!
I love it! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI actually had to click on this because I couldn't imagine what the broom was made of! Potato sticks- of course!!
ReplyDeleteHaHa- it's funny how different a common item can look when you take it out of it's normal context! Thanks for clicking on it and leaving a comment.
